By now, you are probably familiar with the ceremonies most
celebrants offer such as weddings, commitments, renewal of vows, baby namings
etc,- but there are other life events, such as divorce, or the end ofrelationship ceremonies that are just
as important to acknowledge.
I offer individuals or couples experiencing divorce or the
end of a relationship, the respect they so deserve as they survive one of the
most heart-wrenching, exhausting, and financially devastating times in their
lives.
Celebrants are often asked to create and conduct what we
describe as ‘healing’ or ‘life transition’ ceremonies. Divorce is one of those
most significant rites of passage, affecting the divorcing couple but also
their families, children, friends, and the community as a whole.
A healing and constructive way to honour divorce as a rite
of passage, is through a personalized and respectful ceremony. This type of
ceremony is often conducted after the marriage is legally finalised (ie divorce
papers in hand), but this is up to the individual.I feel it takes time to view the past relationship or
marriage with forgiveness and conciliation.
Like all experiences of significant transition, divorce has
the power to transform the lives of those who go through it.Though there is no denying that it’s
painful and takes much inner ‘soul searching’. A divorce or end of relationship
ceremony is a healthy step forward for all concerned to accept and acknowledge
the blessings of the marriage and most importantly, the opportunities that now
lie ahead as the result of its conclusion.
